Profitability of sesame production in Gombe state, Nigeria

Abstract: The paper examines profitability of sesame production in Gombe State, Nigeria. A total of 469 structured questionnaires were distributed to randomly selected sesame farmers in the State. Descriptive statistics and farm budget model were used to analyze the data collected. The study reveals that majority of sesame farmers (80.0% and 87.80%) were male and married with up to 82.50% and 41.0% of the sesame farmers had one form of formal education or the other and cultivated less than 5.0 ha of land. Budget analysis shows that sesame farmers realized a net income of N17,258.20/sesame farmer and N6,303.81/ha of land and N196.42/man-day of labour; gross margin of N46,776.52/sesame farmer and N17,085.82/ha of land and N532.36/man-day of labour; return per naira of N11.83 and gross ratio of 0.89. The study identified inadequate capital, price fluctuations, low quality of sesame to plant, lack of storage and processing facilities and insecurity among others as major constraints to sesame production in Gombe State. The study recommends that Governments provide price support to sesame marketers, encourage sesame marketers to form cooperative societies to take advantages of economies of scale and access loans from financial institutions, obtain appropriate price for their products; provision of improved seeds and other farm inputs at subsidized rates, quantity, place and time to sesame farmers will enhance productivity of sesame farmers in Gombe State, Nigeria.
